Does the VA offer amputation care services?
Yes, the VA offers amputation specialty care services aiming to meet the unique needs of Veterans and service members with amputation at over 140 sites across the country. These teams offer an interdisciplinary approach focusing on comprehensive care, rehabilitation, prosthetic services, and lifelong care. Who is eligible for amputation services at VA?
Veterans and service members living with amputation or who are at-risk for amputation are eligible for amputation specialty care services in the VA. Individuals who have sustained extremity trauma requiring limb salvage procedures with subsequent complex orthotic and rehabilitation needs also qualify for care. Participants must be enrolled in the VA healthcare system and a referral is not required to be scheduled into amputation specialty care clinic; just call the main number of the hospital and ask to be scheduled into amputation specialty care clinic.
What amputation care services are offered in the VA?
The VA amputation specialty care services provides a wide range of services, including pre-amputation evaluations, comprehensive rehabilitation services, prosthetic and orthotic services, pain management, mental health support, and assistance with return to work or school.
Secondary Prosthetic Limbs for recreational activities or sport specific participation may be provided by your Amputee Specialty Team after you have achieved independence with your primary prosthetic limb. A clinical evaluation is required, and demonstration of participation and ability in the specific activity must be demonstrated.
Who are the members of the amputation specialty care clinic?
The ASoC team consists of experienced professionals, including physiatrists, prosthetists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and mental health providers. To find the nearest facility, visit the VA's ASoC facilities webpage or contact your local VA healthcare provider.
Are there any costs associated with amputation care in the VA?
Most enrolled Veterans and service members do not have any out of-pocket costs for amputation services. However, some services may be subject to copayments, depending on income and other eligibility factors.
